Sipadan Water Village

Sipadan Water Village

No matter where you look – it’s like dessert for your eyes!

Sipadan Water Village is that resort you see in the magazines and wish you could visit! Each room is an individual bungalow and the entire resort is built over the water. The whole resort is built in traditional Bajau architecture and uses Belian wood from Borneo. The layout of the resort was carefully chosen as to not disturb that existing reef. So, not only is it exotic and beautiful, it’s building materials, design and layout are all in harmony with its surroundings.

Know Before You Go

All of the bungalows, dive shop, lobby and restaurant are connected by a wooden sidewalk. The sidewalk is beautifully adorned with palm trees, bougainvillea and hibiscus and beneath it is a natural aquarium full of corals and reef creatures.

Sipadan Water Village has 4 types of bungalows. There are a total of 45 bungalows.

  • Junior Cottage
  • Standard Cottage
  • Deluxe Cottage
  • Grand Deluxe Cottage

Most of the cottages are Standard. These charming cottages are about 700 sq ft and have either 2 twin beds or 1 king bed. The rooms are large enough for another twin bed if necessary. 8 of the Standard Cottages have AC. There are 4 Standard Cottages that are configured as duplexes. Each cottage is completely private – but it shares a wall with the cottage next to it and they have a common balcony. It’s ideal for families or friends traveling together.

There are 4 Junior Cottages. They are a little smaller and are located near the dive shop. They have two twin beds or a king bed.

The Deluxe Cottages are a little larger than the Standard Cottage and there are only 2 of them. They only have a king bed. The bathroom is much larger and it has a bathtub in addition to the shower and dual vanities. The Deluxe Cottages have AC.

The Grand Deluxe Cottage is huge at about 1300 sq ft. It has two queen beds, two large walk-in closets, a large bathroom with dual vanities and a large sitting area with a couch and two chairs! There is also a hot tub on the balcony!

Upon arrival, each room has two bottles of water and a water pitcher. The water pitcher is filled daily. And, you can refill the water bottles in the lobby bar, the dive shop or the restaurant as often as you wish.

The electricity in the cottages is 220V.

Resort Details

  • Facilities

swv logo facilitiesSipadan Water Village has an on-site dive shop, a front desk, a lobby bar, a gift shop and a restaurant.

As the resort is all –inclusive, all meals are served in the open air restaurant. Meals are generally presented as a buffet but there is also a grill where items are prepared fresh upon request. The grill prepares eggs to order for breakfast. And, the grill offers a variety of fresh options each day for lunch and dinner.

The gift shop has a wide variety of offerings including snacks, souvenirs, clothing, and toiletries.

The front desk is your go-to source for just about everything! If you have any questions or problems, they can either take care of it themselves or find the right person to take care of you.

And, the lobby bar is clearly the central location for social gatherings! People tend to gather in the lobby bar throughout the day – sharing stories, looking at photos/videos, waiting for friends and enjoying a refreshing beverage! Evenings are a great time in the lobby bar. There’s a great energy as divemasters and guests come together in a wonderfully relaxed and enjoyable environment.

  • Dive Center

swv logo diveshopThe dive shop at Sipadan Water Village is spectacular. It’s a huge, open area with plenty of space for everyone!

All of the bcds and regulators hang in one room. Each person has a number and their bcd and regulator are hanging on a peg with their number on it.

There is another room with a rack for the wetsuits (again, with your wetsuit on a hanger with your number on it). And, each person is assigned a “cubby hole” to store your personal gear (mask, fins, computer, etc.). Each cubby hole has a lock on it so you can secure your belongings.

Tanks are available throughout the day for shore diving. Towels are provided in the dive shop so you don’t need to bring a towel from your room. There is hot drinking water for tea, coffee or hot chocolate. There cold drinking water. And, snacks are available during the afternoon. There a lots of large picnic tables so there’s plenty of space to work on cameras between dives or just relax. A library of fish identification books are available so that you can learn more about the critters you see on your dives.

There are also 4 “camera rooms” at the dive shop. These rooms can be rented and are great for storing your cameras overnight and between dives so that you don’t have to carry them to your room. They are equipped with 110V outlets. The rooms are small as they are only intended for storage and charging. Several people can easily share a room.

One of the best features of the dive shop is the Dive Board. There is a huge white board that shows you where you are diving, what boat you are on, the divemasters on your boat and the other people on your boat. This board is updated each afternoon so you can prepare for the next days dives. You know what time your boat is departing for each dive and the area you are going to. You can prepare your camera in advance to take advantage of the spectacular photo opportunities that await you!

  • Diving

swv logo divingSipadan Water Village offers a unique array of diving. This is one of the few destinations in the world where you can see everything from pygmy seahorses to massive schools of fish – all within the distance of a 20 minute boat ride. Normally, you will either get big stuff or little stuff but Sipadan Water Village has it all. There are three general areas that you will dive. Of course, there are always exceptions, but you can count on diving these three areas – Mabul, Kapalai and the famed Sipadan.

  • Diving Sipadan Island

swv logo sipadanSipadan may be one of the most famous dive destinations in the world. People have been diving Sipadan since 1983 and it has undergone significant changes over the years. But, the diving remains spectacular. In 2004, the Malaysian Government took drastic measures to protect the reefs and marinelife around Sipadan. They removed all the resorts from the island! The resorts that were on the island had to relocate. This had an immediate positive impact on the ecosystem.

In 2006, the Malaysian Government went one step further and began to limit the number of divers that are allowed to dive Sipadan on any given day. They began a permit system where each resort is allocated a certain number of permits and the resort distributes them at their own discretion. Sipadan Water Village has always done the best job of managing their permits. Divers at Sipadan Water Village have not been disappointed with the amount of diving they have done at Sipadan. This is due to the way Sipadan Water Village has managed their permits and their continued commitment to their guests.

  • Diving Mabul and Kapalai Islands

swv logo mabulMabul and Kapalai are pretty similar. The dive sites at Mabul are anywhere from a 30 second boat ride to 5 minutes. The dive sites at Kapalai are a 7-10 minute boat ride! Although there is a wall on the west side of Mabul, most of the dive sites at Mabul and Kapalai will be patch coral, sand, eel grass or artificial reef. And, most of the critters will be smaller than a grouper. You will find (rather – your divemaster will find) the most incredible critters – eels, octopus, cuttlefish, squid, squat lobsters, an array of dragonettes, shrimps, crabs, stone fish, bat fish, stargazers … the list is endless! This area is absolutely known for it’s macro, but there are spectacular and dramatic wide-angle opportunities, too! The artificial reefs create a terrific setting for wide angle. And, diving right under the dock with the suns rays coming down make for very dramatic images!
