Oceans for Youth has created a People-to-People program that allows us to visit Cuba (legally) and participate in an educational program AND dive! What else could you ask for?!
We will spend 2 nights at the 5 Star Parque Central Hotel in Havana, visit with Cuban marine scientists and marine experts about ocean conservation and cultural exchanges. Dr. Julio A Baisre, world renowned expert, will offer an interactive exchange to discuss how Cuba has maintained one of the healthiest marine ecosystems in the Caribbean. We will also visit the town of Cojimar and Habana Vieja. Then we will spend 7 nights aboard the Jardines Aggressor as we explore the Gardens of the Queen National Park (Jardines de la Reina). You can expect to see pristine coral reefs, steep walls, large populations of fish including sharks and jewfish up to 400lbs, snapper, grouper and so much more! They have several species of sharks in Cuba including black tip, lemon, nurse, silky and even the great hammerhead. During our stay on the Jardines Aggressor, we will have discussions and presentations hosted by biologists and Cuban specialists about the marine environment, conservation and the importance of this magnificent ecosystem.
The Gardens of the Queen encompasses a chain of 250 virgin coral and mangrove islands that extend along 75 miles of beautiful clear turquoise water. This area was declared a Marine Park in 1996 and have been protected since that time.
The Jardines Aggressor is a newly constructed (actually still under construction at this time) 110' yacht with a 22' beam. There are 8 Deluxe Staterooms and 2 Master Staterooms for a maximum capacity of 20 divers.
